Updating

This blog of mine might be a little dark and dusty until the end of July.
My family is here and since it's been almost a year since we've been together, I'm not spending too much time on the computer, but I thought I'd take a moment for an update post.

I made the announcement last week, but just in case you missed it, my husband has re-enlisted and we will be moving from NC back to CA to go to the Defense Language Institute for a year and a half.  The DLI is located basically in our hometown, so we're moving home. We're super excited, but pretty sad to be leaving North Carolina and our little friend-family here, but it's just all part of the adventure!

I'm sure you've heard/read this a million times but Google reader is shutting down today.  Find me on Bloglovin if you like reading the random things I write (There's a little button on the side of my blog that will take you right to it!).

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July holiday and that this fun Summer month treats you well!

..

Yesterday was good! The sun was shining for the first time in a few days and we got some really good news that I'll share soon, once everything is final.  Yesterday also marked one week until the Mann/Mass vacation starts with Becca coming a week early.  I can't wait to see them and I really can't wait to be at the river.

Here are some things I've found lately that I've loved:

This recipe is delicious, and yes, try to let it sit for longer than 30 minutes.

This blog is full of pretty, inspiring pictures.

This video makes me want to go on a road trip and camping and hiking.

This etsy shop is super cute, I want this print for my kitchen!

Happy Thursday! One more day til' the weekend!

Weekend in photos.

1/ Exploring Carthage with my love and finding this amazing abandoned house we want to fix up! 2/ Finding another abandoned building we want to turn into a restaurant and bar. We don't have big plans for our future at all!  3/ Taking a dirt road through post to get home and finding a pretty little bridge and creek.  4/ Summer storms are my absolute favorite.  5/  Watching the sun set on the back porch with this adorable face.

A late list // 52 Lists Project

 photo b90c1ed8-8c4d-479e-bb22-3e9fbaf561df_zpsee0f8b4b.jpg

We got our computer fixed. Here's my late list.
This one really made me stop and think. It made me think about how I can be a better wife, daughter, sister, and friend.  How can you show love to others? Anything I missed?

rainy day

It's a bad case of the Monday's day.  Helped out by the fact that it's been raining for almost three days straight and it's supposed to be raining for awhile.  We had a really nice weekend though, despite the weather.  It was the kind of weekend that made us feel young. We slept all day and stayed up all night and had lots of fun with friends.
Although, maybe I'm not so young because I feel like I need to recover today. So this is my plan...

Except I'm getting up off my butt and making dinner and folding laundry and sweeping the floor.
Oh! Our computer isn't working...thanks to sharp puppy teeth and so I'll do my list later on in the week.
Have a good day loves!

They are not glamorous! The lie of satin sheets.

Kim Novak makes satin sheets look so glamorous.  It's a LIE though.  Satin sheets are not glamorous or sexy or better than your average cotton sheets!

When we first got to NC with our queen size bed, I realized that we didn't own sheets for it.  A quick trip to Walmart resulted in my husband begging for satin sheets...fake, cheetah print, satin sheets.  I said, "Sure, why not?"  We were newlyweds and having fun, but those sheets were not fun.  The first few months we used them it was extremely hot outside so we had a fan going in our room.  The sheets are so slippery that they would fly right off of us if we didn't hold them down while we slept.  The genius who came up with pairing satin sheets with satin pillow cases should be shot, because your pillow would just slip right out from underneath your head in the middle of the night.  The one thing that was nice about satin sheets was that your hair would look better in the morning.  I bring this up now, almost a year later, because we pulled them out last night (after an excited puppy got too excited on our bed and we needed to change the sheets) and I realized again just how much I despise satin sheets.

So a word of warning, don't buy satin sheets. Ever.

Maybe..

Maybe I've been soaking up the sun everyday since Sunday and I'm loving it.

Maybe my husband and I think we beat each other up in our sleep...#restlesssleepersforthewin.

Maybe I'm SUPER bummed that Cassie's exploding ovaries got in the way of our three days together.

Maybe I'm suffering from major writers block lately and feeling very uninspired.

Maybe I've procrastinated folding laundry for almost a week.

Maybe I piled it all on my bed so that I would have an excuse to get it done today.

Maybe the closer it gets to seeing my family the more homesick I get.

Maybe I've realized it's starting to bug me that we can't be at the beach in 20 minutes.

Maybe I'm gonna go fold that laundry now...maybe...

Sleep.

I go to bed with socks on almost every night and every morning I wake up and they are set neatly beside the bed.  Not stuffed at the bottom, like my hubby's are (I swear every time I change the sheets I wonder how he hasn't ran out of socks!), I physically take my socks off and put them down on the floor.  What I thought about today was I don't remember doing it.  I take my socks off every night and don't remember it.  I also don't remember taking my retainer out of my mouth on the nights I wear it.  Seriously, I don't know how long it stays in before I take it out.

Anyways, enough of my rambling. There are some things I remember, like getting head butted or elbowed abruptly awake.  My roommate is a violent sleeper sometimes, but I don't love him any less.

climbing that mountain

Two more weeks and we've conquered another tough month.  Have you ever had a streak where you feel like you can't catch a breath before another wave of misfortune hits you?  How do you cope with that?  We've been praying a lot and leaning on each other.  Sometimes I may not act like it, because I get caught up in the stress and worry of things, but I'm so grateful that we're going through this time in life together.
I'm just ready for things to run smoothly.

Saturday.

Happy Saturday friends! I hope you're happy and that your house isn't invaded by a spring cold this weekend.  While you're lounging about, here are some things to do:
Watch this,
Listen to this,
Read this,
Eat this,
Drink this.

Life lately

Day 3 of extreme pollen.  Having a little fun with it despite the fact that my dogs and my floors are covered in it.  It poses the age old question of should I clean now or wait until it rains and things settle down.  I think I'll wait.

This is the underside of our truck. We have had transportation issues since I hit a deer with my car right after moving here and I'm starting to wonder when we're going to get a break.  We had just put a lot of our paycheck into fixing the truck so James could have one of his vehicles working and then he threw a rod and it's now totaled.  Vehicles - 4(ish) Massingales - 0.  We'll be taking donations to put into the "fix the Harley fund" if anyone wants to donate.

This is how we spent our Monday night after that happened to the truck.  Wine for me, beer for him.

Abby is huge now.  It blows my mind every time I look at the pictures of her when we first brought her home.  She's always getting into something and still likes to bite our hands and ankles, but we're working on it.

(untitled)

My first North Carolina spring is here.  I've been using our deck for some much needed sun-soaking and book reading.  I was expecting and anticipating the rise in temperature, but I wasn't expecting pine pollen.  The last few mornings when I get up and let the dogs out the air is thick with it, the cars in our neighborhood are dull and yellow, and I need a pill-a-day to keep the allergies away.  It sticks to everything, including wet puppy noses that are always sniffing something.  Our bathroom needs a complete scrub down because of a window being left open to help with the heat inside.  I'm not complaining, I'm enjoying it.  This is the North Carolina I'm used to and love.  The one that makes you want to live in a pool and wear as little clothing as possible.  Bring on the humidity and the sun-kissed skin.  I'm more than ready.

Easter.

This weekend was a welcomed four day.
We're on a roll with seeing and being with friends and I really like it.
Plus! We are no longer just a one car family! The truck has two brand new tires and I have my car back.
I will be celebrating by running to the library and the grocery store.

Easter Sunday was a really nice day, despite the rain.  Easter service at our new church was good, but I always makes me miss home a little.  James bought a grill, because you can't live in NC and not "grill out," so we had our friends and their dogs over for a steak dinner and some good old, Super Nintendo.  We also loaded everyone up in the car and went to the dog park, which is always an experience.  My sweet husband surprised all of us with Easter Baskets that were mostly Star Wars themed, which made the day even sweeter.

This week is a three day weekend because we got to get our dance on at the ball. I'm super excited and I can't wait to share pictures!  Have a good week everyone!

Two rules.

Disclaimer: The following is strictly opinion and observation. If you don't agree that's fine because I respect your opinion.

"There are two rules when it comes to FRG/town hall meetings:
1. Don't raise your hand.
2. Don't ask questions."

I was given this set of instructions on my way to my first town hall meeting of my Army wife life. I laughed and thought it was funny, but yesterday I began to realize it was some of the best advice given. These meetings are no where near what I had expected in the beginning and I blame TV.

I started watching Army Wives several years ago. There was something relatable about it and until some other shows recently it was the only one that could make me cry my eyes out and legitimately feel sad.  They show women from all walks of life in the Army, from General's wives to enlisted personnel.  Except the one relatable enlisted family decided to go to officer route, which made me a little mad because enlisted people need love too, but I digress.   Now that I'm a Army wife, I realize how much of a misrepresentation this show is.

One aspect that this show pushes hard is the Family Readiness Group (FRG). You see many meetings of this group on the show. Always it is a group of wives meeting together to plan parties and events, fundraisers, and that is about it.  There are no husbands or military personnel present at the meetings and the FRG leader does all the talking. You also see members of the FRG bringing new wives dinner to welcome them to the unit or pie because their husband is deployed.  Lately the show had been depicting these town hall meetings as well, which is also led by the head of the FRG.

Let me tell you, this is not the way it works in real life. For one, no one brought me dinner to welcome me to the unit. We could have used some free dinner too!  The meetings that I have attended are full of more husbands without their wives, than wives without their husbands.  The reason for that is most guys are bribed to attend with a late call or it's just plain mandatory for them to be there.  Most of the time the meetings are led by a Brigade/Squadron/Company commander and then the FRG leader stands up at the end and says some thing along the lines of, "We need more people to sign up for the FRG," and that's about it.  To be honest I've had a bad taste in my mouth for the FRG ever since I was told by an FRG leader that I was not authorized to be a part of their website when I was just a fiance and we were going through a deployment.  Turns out, I was authorized and I figured out how to join on my own.  She was not helpful and in no way nice.

Now, because these meetings are not full of just civilian women and your husband's peers, bosses and his bosses bosses are present this is where the rules above come into effect.  Last night at the town hall meeting we attended, we were getting briefed on how this sequestration was going to affect Ft. Bragg and mostly its civilian personnel.  The Brigade Commander was doing all the talking and then it came time for questions.  Now, this man did a good job of explaining how the sequestration was going to impact the areas of schools and daycare.  There are going to be furloughs for civilian workers and schools are going to be closing one day a week and the same for daycare facilities.

A wife raised her hand, rule #1 broke, and begins to complain about how it's not fair that she has to pay for day care for 5 days a week when she's only getting 4.  The Colonel calmly explained that she's only paying for the daycare she is receiving. Any normal person would realize that she is only going to be paying for 4 days, but this woman kept going with what she was saying and insisting that it's not fair she has to pay for the whole week and he kept assuring her that she's not paying extra.  Finally he just shook his head and moved onto the next question.

Another wife, after hearing several times that this meeting was mainly talking about civilian personnel, asked him (rule #2 broken) if because civilian hours were getting cut, does that mean that military personnel won't be working long hours either? *At this point I'm smacking my forehead.*  People are laughing, the Colonel is shaking his head and saying no and her husband had to be shrinking in his seat.

This was all observation and somewhat entertaining to me last night.  Because these meetings are not in a room full of women who can talk to their heart's content, it's in a setting where not a lot of discussion can take place if a wife does have a question and it's full of your husband's peers, bosses, and bosses' bosses, just adhere to the two simple rules.  Don't embarrass your husband.  Talk with him afterwards if you have questions or find that elusive FRG leader and ask her if you don't understand something.

sunday.

Sunday was a great day.  After being freezing for months the cold streak broke and there were shorts and t-shirts out in full force.  There was also a bbq, beer, 4-wheelers, dogs, and guns.  Our group of friends are really some of my favorite people to spend time with.  I'm a fan of fun Sundays!

saturday.

My husband is many things, but right now he is the king of breakfast food.
We slept in late.  A miracle, if ever there was one, because sleeping in with a puppy just doesn't happen.
He got up and I was instructed to "chill," which means I'm sitting on our bed catching up on blogs, and he would go work his magic in the kitchen.  I'm holding a hot cup of tea, which was brought to me (I tried to go make it myself and he told me I wasn't a good listener) and my whole house smells like amazingness bacon.
Excuse me while I go finish chilling and eating whatever delicious meal my king of breakfast food made.

Happy Weekend!

Lately

Lately there hasn't been a lot of blogging because this happened...

After a wonderful Valentine's Day, I found out my laptop screen was shattered...and James's computer wasn't working either. Fun stuff! Now we have at least one working computer though.

Then after not having a computer, this happened...

We had a day full of wonderful snow.  It was a surprise and I just sat on the couch and watched it fall for hours.

Then over the holiday weekend we made a trip to Charlotte to go to Ikea and Jack in the Box.
We finally have nightstands and I think our room is coming along nicely!

Hopefully the blogging and the writing will all get back on track.
I've gotta go get some dinner ready!

you don't know you'll miss it til' you don't have it

Have you ever experienced realizing you miss something that you wouldn't miss normally?
Let me tell you what I'm missing right now...night stands.  Yes, those little tables that you put by your bed that house lamps and books and a cup of tea, are what I'm missing most right now.

Look how complete and perfect that bedroom looks!  We've been spending a whole lot of time in our room because our living room is lacking in the entertainment department and I think we have both said, "We need night stands," over a hundred times in the past week or so.  Thank goodness for tax returns and Christmas gift cards!  Hopefully I can show you guys our more complete room very soon.

Anyone else missing something that's not normal?
